Refuting the Idea that Born Again Christians Don't Think Mary is Important
Above is a meme by some Roman Catholics daring born again Christians to tell Jesus that His mom isn't important. The truth is born again Christians respect Mary or consider her to be one of the greatest woman in the Bible. Some may even preach of Mary as a mother to model even if they reject Roman Catholic doctrines about Mary not found in the Bible. I believe Mary is important in many ways such as her being of the lineage of David (from David's other son Nathan), that she would become the virgin that will bear the Savior in His humanity and she definitely said, "Behold the handmaid of the LORD, let it be done according to Your Word." (Luke 1:38) to the angel. Mary is a great example of obedience. She's praiseworthy of how she brought a pair of turtledoves to be offered as sin sacrifices. Mary knew that she was a sinner in need of grace. Otherwise, why would she declare in Luke 1:47 that God is her Savior? Mary is an important role model and beloved sister-in-Christ.
What are the born again Christians against? It's the excessive exaltation of Mary. Roman Catholics may say that they don't worship Mary but actions speak louder than words. Alphonsus Ligouri in his prayer "Hail Holy Queen" admits he worships Mary. Roman Catholics are assigning titles to Mary that should belong to God alone. Roman Catholics claim not to worship Mary but their actions speak louder than words. The whole Rosary is devoted to Mary. Mary commanded none of these things such as praying to her. In John 2:5, Mary quickly pointed people not to herself but to Jesus. Jesus never invited people to His earthly mother but to Himself. David was also Jesus' earthly ancestor but David called his Son as Lord in Psalm 110:1. David having written the Psalms under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit knew that the Son of God would be born of a virgin from his lineage.
If born again Christians hate Mary then consider the actions. They get rid of images of Mary because they aren't biblical. More than that, praying to Mary or to anyone else but God is already idolatry. To teach that Mary intercedes for sinners like the living saints is a grave error. Mary went to Heaven but not to be crowned Queen of Heaven. The idea of Mary's assumption is not even in the Bible or history books. Yet, Roman Catholicism has exalted Mary in such a place that she herself would not accept. Mary wanted to glorify God yet why is she now more glorified than God? Mary would certainly not be so happy if she knew what was going on.
If born again Christians never thought of Mary as important then do they even encourage hatred for Mary? Not at all. They are simply preaching the truth about Mary the earthly mother of Jesus from the Bible. A preacher would preach that Mary is indeed a mother to model but he would shun any idea about her not in the Bible. I agree that Jesus did honor Mary but never beyond the honor that she deserves. Mary is still well-preached to have been an honorary sister. However, born again Christians know that only living saints and that prayer must be direct to God the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus invited people to Himself and not His earthly mother. Also, Jesus called Mary as "woman" and not as "mother". Mary herself never exalted herself either to be the mother of humanity. Instead, she remained as the meek, humble, obedient follower of Jesus.
Arthur W. Pink a Protestant preacher also wrote highly of Mary saying:
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother (John 19:25).
His disciples may desert Him, His friends may forsake Him, His nation may despise Him, but His mother stands there at the foot of His cross. Oh, who can fathom or analyze the mother-heart.
There she is: she does not crouch away, she does not faint, she does not even sink to the ground in her grief - she stands. Her action and attitude are unique. In all the annals of history of our race there is no parallel. What transcendent courage. She stood by the cross of Jesus - what marvellous fortitude. She represses her grief, and stands there silent. Was it not reverence for the Lord which kept her from disturbing his last moments?
Also, the late Anthony Pezzotta wrote on page 147 of his book Truth Encounter the following of what it means to love Mary biblically:
We have to thank God for Mary and rejoice because of her. We consider her blessed. Mary is definitely a shining example of how we, as believers, should live. She exemplifies genuine faith, dedication, purity, humility, perseverance, self-denial and suffering for the sake of Christ. She was knowledgeable of the Scriptures and obedient to its precepts.
However, we must not extol Mary beyond her role as a believer. Most of the dogmas and practices of Catholicism concerning Mary are against the Word of God. Mary, herself, surely would not want us to accept them. She would want us to follow God's Word and to focus on Christ and trust Him alone as our Mediator.
Yes, Mary is indeed important like every follower of Christ is important. She's still one of the biggest role models ever. We can all learn a lot from Mary's wonderful life. We can learn how Mary herself was last seen praying with the disciples and not being prayed to by the disciples. That was the last time we saw Mary. The Scripture became silent of Mary's life before God took home. I believe Mary is rejoicing among the saints but she is never exalted above them. She like every other person who is saved is indeed important. Yet, some Roman Catholics will still purposely miss the point regardless out of a hardened heart.
