Even the Good News Translation (A Roman Catholic Translation) Says Christ is the Rock
Roman Catholics really need to spend more time reading their Bibles than having the priest interpret it for them. Besides, even the Good News Translation (GNT) says that Christ is the Rock:
1st Corinthians 10:4
And drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ Himself.
It really is something when Roman Catholics really still want to insist that Peter is the Rock. Even Matthew 16:18-19 is spelled out in such a way to distinguish Peter as a rock and the Rock upon which the Church will be built.
Matthew 16:18
And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it.
It's already clear that there's a clear distinction yet Roman Catholics still insist that Peter is the rock. Peter was written to be distinguished as a rock and Jesus was pointing to the Rock. Obviously, he was telling Peter that the church will be built upon the Rock while Peter was but a rock. Peter himself never even referred to himself ever as the Rock yet the Popes (claiming to be his successors) claim to be.
Which makes me realize that the Catechism of the Catholic Church tries to explain it as such with this:
The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the ‘rock’ of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock…” [directly referring here to Matthew 16:18]
Once again, Rome tries to override the obvious content that's even found in Catholic Bibles such as the GNT. Petros refers to Peter and Petra refers to the Rock foundation. Again, the big secret of Catholic Bibles has always been to ask the priest for interpretation rather than have the privilege of studying it yourself. Not even the Greek text says that "You are Peter and I will build My Church upon you." Rather, it's rendered as "You are Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church." Again, it's all about reading it clearly yet Roman Catholics somehow still insist the Church is built on Peter.
This again poses a question - which is more supreme for the rules of the tradition of the Church? Should it be the Catechism of the Catholic Church or should the Bible be the basis of writing down catechisms? Catechism means teachings of the Church and which better place to find all the traditions of Christendom than to go back to the Bible. Besides, Peter never elevated himself above the apostles neither did he call himself the Vicar of Christ. Nope, Peter was made the first pastor of the church along with the other apostles. Peter was given the tremendous responsibility of every pastor - to feed the flock with understanding of the Word of God!
If anything, Peter was fulfilling the office in Ephesians 4:11 which even the GNT doesn't mention priests but pastors. Peter was filling in the place of apostle and pastor in Acts 2. Peter never reigned over above all the other apostles. Instead, he was what he claimed he was - a fellow elder (1st Peter 5:1).
