David's Son (Descendant) and Lord, Mary's Son and Lord
The message of Christmas is the fulfillment of the birth of Jesus. This would be the birth of the one who is called the Son of David. Legally and biologically, Jesus in His humanity was a son of David. Yet, He is referred to as the Son of David because He is that fulfillment that Matthew and Luke document the genealogy. Matthew records the legal lineage from Solomon down to Joseph, the legal father of Jesus. Luke's genealogy as Heli as the supposed father of Joseph but this was actually Mary's lineage. Mary's lineage and Joseph's lineage are both just as important. Jesus in His humanity is the Son of David both legally and biologically. Mary herself was a descendant of David from David's other son Nathan.
How is Mary's unique relationship with Jesus? She is the mother of Jesus in His humanity. Reading Luke 1 would tell you that Mary couldn't even understand how things are possible until the angel Gabriel told her what she needed to know. Mary had her lapses proving that she was still a sinner saved by grace. Mary herself was rejoicing in God her savior (Luke 1:47). I wonder if Mary was reading Psalm 110 at that time before the announcement of the birth of the Savior. David already said, "The LORD said unto my Lord." David was already aware that the Messiah will come in human form from his lineage. Mary, however, never expected that she would be that descendant of David to become the human mother of the eternal Son of God.
Try to notice the confusion of the Jews. Matthew 22:45, Mark 12:37, and Luke 20:44 have people asking how David can call his son (descendant) as Lord? It's because of the hypostatic union. Humanly speaking, David was Jesus' ancestor. The lineage was already traced from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and down to Judah. Genesis 49:9-12 says that the Messiah (Shiloh) will come out of the tribe of Judah. After Judah, we realize that Phares was an illegitimate child and a bastard can't enter the congregation until the tenth generation (Deuteronomy 23:2). However, we must realize that Jesus said in John 8:58 that He came before Abraham. That alone would really help understand how Jesus can be both David's son (descendant) and Lord at the same time.
If David can have that unique relationship then why not Mary who is a descendant of David? John 2:1-10 shows the wedding of Cana. Some people try to say that Mary does intercede yet they really don't understand the fifth verse. Mary told the people to do whatever Jesus (not her) would tell them to do. Jesus even politely called her "woman" and told her that her time had not yet come. The Good News Translation (GNT) makes it even easier to understand by stating that Jesus politely told Mary not to tell Him what to do because His time had not yet come. Jesus called Mary "woman" throughout the ministry. Jesus never called Mary as "mother" in His final moments on the cross either (John 19:26). John was chosen to take care of Mary because His half-brothers were not yet believers at that time (Psalm 69:8, John 7:5). The half-brothers only came to believe after the resurrection. Mary may have been Jesus' mother in His humanity yet she couldn't be the mother in His divinity. In due fairness, Roman Catholics don't teach that Mary is the mother of the Trinity but the mother of God in His humanity. Yet, God has no mother. I remembered even how a program on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) mentioned that Jesus created His mother. Yet, Roman Catholics have put too much emphasis on Mary without knowing it.
Why would it still be wrong to have any form of spiritual devotion to Mary? It's not only because Mary told the people to do what Jesus told them to do. It's because Mary is the human vessel to serve the purpose of providing Jesus with His human mother. However, Mary was born centuries later but Jesus was already the pre-existent Son of God. Mary wasn't there then Jesus created the Universe with the Father and the Spirit. Also, Mary was praying with the disciples and not prayed to by them. Mary would later silently leave the pages of Scripture after Acts 2. It's just a ridiculous myth that Luke was a devotee of Mary. True, Luke had a focus on Mary's lineage but it didn't mean Luke was a devotee of Mary. Luke no longer mentioned Mary at all after Acts 2. Instead, the focus shifted away from Mary to the apostles proving she's not any higher than the rest of those redeemed in Christ.
The real focus of the Gospel has never been Mary. Mary wouldn't want people to focus on her either. Jesus never invited people to His mother but to Himself. Mary fully stood in full reverence of her Lord at the foot of the cross. Mary was more than just an earthly mother but one of Jesus' most faithful followers. Mary followed Jesus to the cross not just because of their earthly relationship but also because out of reverence for the Lord. Mary stood at the cross in full reverence not to disturb Jesus in His final moments. If Mary herself was pointing people to Jesus then why are people giving her too much importance that she herself never did? She saw Jesus more as her Lord than her Son. True, Jesus was very respectful to her and honored her but she was honored like any other true follower of Christ. Mary is an honorable woman to follow but never to be viewed as the mother of God or a co-mediator. She would never accept such titles which Scripture would only attribute to Jesus.
